Lisa Alter is a Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School and a partner and founding member of the firm of Alter, Kendrick & Baron, LLP in New York City. Her practice is focused primarily in the area of copyright law, with a particular emphasis on music copyright issues. She advises a number of prominent major and independent music publishing companies, as well as equity investors, in complex copyright and transactional matters relating to the acquisition, sale and/or administration of music copyright catalogues. Ms. Alter’s clients include numerous songwriters, recording artists and producers, as well as musical estates comprising the successors to many of the great American songbook composers and lyricists. Among her clients are many inductees in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and The Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and the recipients of Grammy and Ivor Novello awards.


Ms. Alter lectures frequently on copyright issues at professional and music industry meetings in both the US and the UK.  She has represented clients in connection with legislative matters impacting their copyright interests and advises clients outside the US regarding the implications of US copyright law in the context of their global transactions. In addition, she consults on US copyright law as it relates to estate planning and evaluation, pre-nuptial agreements and marital dissolution settlements.


Ms. Alter received her J.D. from New York University School of Law and her B.A. from Wesleyan University. As part of her undergraduate work she studied as a general course student at The London School of Economics and Political Science.  Prior to founding Alter, Kendrick & Baron, Ms. Alter served as General Counsel to The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization.  Ms. Alter is the author of Protecting Your Musical Copyrights, which has been released in its third edition, as well as a number of articles addressing music licensing topics.
