With significant involvement from SFALP students, San Francisco brought a consumer protection action against Monster Beverage Corporation for unlawfully marketing highly-caffeinated energy drinks to children as young as six years old, despite scientific findings that such products may cause "significant morbidity in adolescents" from elevated blood pressure, brain seizures, and severe cardiac events. The City also alleged Monster encouraged underage consumption of alcohol with its drinks and falsely advertised its drinks as healthy or beneficial.
