Ryan Liss

Ryan Liss is a J.S.D. candidate at Yale Law School, where he studies as a Trudeau Scholar and Canadian Social Science and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellow. He is currently an Associate in Law at Columbia Law School. Prior to coming to Yale in 2012, Ryan served as the law clerk to the Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He has held positions with the International Criminal Court, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and Coalition for the International Criminal Court in New York and at the Kampala Review Conference and the Canadian Centre for International Justice. He worked with NGOs advocating for child rights in the Philippines and for one of Canada’s leading boutique litigation firms.

Throughout his studies at the University of Toronto and Yale, Ryan has been involved in pro bono and clinic advocacy work on international human rights and constitutional rights in cases before the Supreme Court of Canada, the United Nations Human Rights Committee, and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. While completing his J.D., Ryan was an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Law and International Relations.

Ryan’s doctoral work examines the interaction of domestic and international processes of accountability for international crimes. He has previously published in the areas of international humanitarian law, international human rights law, and the law concerning the use of force.
