Abbe R. Gluck Named Chair of Yale’s Women Faculty Forum
Abbe R. Gluck ’00; Alfred M. Rankin Professor of Law and founding faculty director of the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy, Yale Law School; and Professor of Internal Medicine (General Medicine), Yale School of Medicine; will become the chair of Yale University’s Women Faculty Forum (WFF). She follows, among others, Professors Naomi Rogers, Judith Resnik, Claire Bowern, and senior research scientist Nina Stachenfeld, as previous chairs.
Gluck’s scholarship is highly cited in the fields of health law, Congress and legislation, and complex civil litigation, and she has extensive practice experience. In 2012, she founded the Yale Medical-Legal Partnership and, more recently, served as special counsel to President Biden and as lead counsel for the national COVID-19 response.
She serves on many boards and commissions nationally, including in senior positions in the Uniform Law Commission, and the American Law Institute, and is an active faculty leader. In 2015, she was recipient of the Yale Law Women's Faculty Excellence Award.
As chair of WFF, Gluck’s leadership and commitment will guide the organization to promote scholarship by and for women, and create opportunities for leadership, mentoring, networking, and collaboration for women across Yale. Gluck previously served on WFF’s Steering Committee.
“It is an incredible privilege to work with and for women across the University during this critical time,” Gluck said. “The energy and productivity that emerge when faculty across departments and schools work together to address and advance the needs of our community is just amazing.” WFF’s agenda this year — its 25th anniversary year — spans the gamut from leadership training, to AI workshops, career advising, scholarship panels, networking, and research.
Gluck has extensive experience working as a lawyer in all levels of government. She served as senior staff in the administrations of New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Following law school, she clerked for then-Chief Judge Ralph K. Winter ’60 on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, and for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Her newest book is “Law and the 100 Year Life: Transforming Our Institutions for a Longer Lifespan” (with Alstott et al.), following “COVID-19 and the Law: Disruption, Impacts, Legacy” (with Cohen et al); “The Trillion Dollar Revolution: How the Affordable Care Act Transformed Politics, Law, and Health Care in America” with Zeke Emanuel; and “A New Deal for Cancer: Lessons from a 50-Year War” with Charles Fuchs. Gluck’s scholarship has been published in the Yale Law Journal, the Harvard Law Review, the Stanford Law Review, the Columbia Law Review, the New England Journal of Medicine, Health Affairs, and many other journals.
The WFF was established in 2001 by senior women faculty during Yale’s Tercentennial year to advance research, support, and community building by and for women in the University.
