Students Explore International Law as Salzburg Cutler Fellows

In March, students from Yale Law School and 13 other leading U.S. law schools explored the topic of international law at the ninth annual Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program.

The six-session online program, which ran from March 11–27, 2021, allowed top law students to interact with legal professionals, public servants, and leaders in the fields of international law and public service.

Representing Yale Law School were Michael Avi-Yonah ’22, Ellen Nohle ’21 LLM, Angela Remus ’22, and Mark Stevens ’21. They were joined by faculty representative Mindy Jane Roseman, Director of International Law Programs and Director of the Gruber Program for Global Justice and Women’s Rights at Yale Law School.

This year’s speakers included Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, Perry World House Professor of Practice of Law and Human Rights at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and former Jordanian diplomat who has recently been appointed president & CEO of the International Peace Institute; Sue Biniaz, Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School, Senior Fellow for Climate Change at the United Nations Foundation, and previously lead climate lawyer for the U.S. Department of State; William Burke-White, Richard Perry Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and leading expert on U.S. foreign policy, multilateral institutions, and international law; and John B. Bellinger III, Partner at Arnold & Porter LLP and former Legal Adviser to the U.S. Department of State and National Security Council. 

Faculty from the participating law schools also provided individual critiques and advice on journal publication to the Fellows on their student papers. Topics for this year’s papers were wide-ranging and included cyberespionage, refugee rights, and the interaction between international law and environmental sustainability.

Established in 2012, the Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program collaborates with 14 U.S. law schools. The Program is held under the auspices of the Lloyd N. Cutler Center for the Rule of Law. The Center was established in 2010 to honor Lloyd N. Cutler, former chairman of the board of the Salzburg Global Seminar as well as former White House Counsel.
