On-Air Legal Commentary in the Trump Era: A Conversation with Elie Honig, CNN's Senior Legal Analyst

Elie Honig is a CNN Senior Legal Analyst who worked for 14 years as a federal and state prosecutor. He provides on-air commentary and analysis for CNN on news relating to the U.S. Department of Justice, major criminal trials, the Supreme Court, Congressional and grand jury investigations, national security, policing, and other legal issues. Honig is the national bestselling author of two books for HarperCollins, “Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor’s Code and Corrupted the Justice Department,” and “Untouchable: How Powerful People Get Away With It.” His third book, about the Justice Department’s use of special prosecutors to investigate presidents, will publish in September 2025.  He also writes a weekly column for New York Magazine and for Cafe.com, and he hosts two podcasts for Vox Media, including the true crime podcast “Up Against the Mob.” From 2004 to 2012, Honig worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He successfully prosecuted over 100 members and associates of La Cosa Nostra, including Bosses and other high-ranking members of the Gambino and Genovese Organized Crime Families. Honig served as Deputy Director, and then Director, of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice from 2012 through 2018. Honig also teaches at Rutgers University and works as special counsel to a New Jersey law firm, Lowenstein Sandler. He is a graduate of Rutgers College and Harvard Law School.
