How do Chinese netizens understand themselves, their identities, and the world? In this talk, award-winning journalist Yi-Ling Liu will explore the mores and metaphors of online life in China.

Yi-Ling Liu is a writer based in China. Her work on Chinese society, technology and culture has been published in the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, WIRED, and the New Yorker on topics ranging from science-fiction novelists to rural live-streamers to gay dating apps. She writes a column on the Chinese internet for Rest of World, and is writing a book about individuals in China navigating the ever-shifting boundaries of the state on public life, to be published by Penguin. She is a 2021 New America Fellow, a recipient of the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award, and an Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar.
