Governor Deval Patrick will share his thoughts on the dual crises facing our democracy in a lunch talk on October 4. He will discuss his evolving views on how we can make our democracy function more effectively (voter enfranchisement, registration, eliminating barriers); and how we can make our democracy more meaningful to citizens as a path to a better life, that is, demonstrate why democracy matters to everyday citizens – and why they might justifiably feel otherwise.
Governor Patrick is Professor of Practice and Co-Director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School. He served as the governor of Massachusetts from 2007-2015. During his two terms, Governor Patrick focused on health care, public schools and public infrastructure, and launched initiatives stimulating clean energy and biotechnology. Under his leadership, Massachusetts ranked first in the nation in student achievement, energy efficiency, health care coverage, veterans’ services, and entrepreneurship, and emerged from the Great Recession to achieve a 25-year high in employment. He led the city and commonwealth through the trauma of the Boston Marathon bombing, cultivating a sense of shared community under the mantra of “Boston Strong.” After his governorship Patrick founded and led an impact investment fund, the first fund in a major financial institution to focus on delivering both superior financial return and significant positive social impact.
