Growing prescription drug prices are creating an unsustainable problem for patients’ pocketbooks and state budgets. Given intransigence on this issue at the federal level, over the past year the Global Health Justice Partnership (GHJP) has supported various state-level campaigns to rein in these prices. In partnership with the National Physicians Alliance and the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut, the GHJP team has advocated for fair pricing and transparency bills. In the past year, these efforts and the efforts by other coalitions have led to the passage of ground-breaking bills in states including California, Maryland, Nevada, and New York.
GHJP’s work has included testifying before state legislatures, presenting to stakeholders across the country, and co-authoring a report for advocates and policymakers that synthesizes insights from different drug pricing initiatives. This talk will provide background on the issue of rising prescription drug prices, the status of current efforts, and what’s next for this movement.
