The tsunami of lies and conspiracy theories that led to the January 6 attack on the Capitol and the increased visibility of hatred and extremism on social media has led many in the US to question the wisdom of American free speech exceptionalism.

In stark contrast to the US, European democracies - and the EU - have adopted a number of laws and measures to curb misinformation and hate speech in the digital age. Should the US look to Europe when it comes to free speech? Jacob Mchangama gives a diagnosis on the future of free speech as seen through the prism of the history of this fundamental freedom.

Jacob Mchangama is the founder and executive director of the Danish think tank Justitia and the host of the podcast Clear and Present Danger: A History of Free Speech. He is the author of the forthcoming book Free Speech: A History from Socrates to Social Media. His writing on free speech has appeared in the Economist, the Washington Post, Foreign Policy, and many other outlets around the world. He lives in Copenhagen, Denmark.
