Law French: A Rare Book Room Open House

Blackstone called it that “barbarous dialect.”  Roger North found the alternative “françoise, or very uncouth.”  Frolic in françoise at November’s Rare Book open house on Law French, the legal dialect in use in English courts from the thirteenth century until banned by statute in 1731.
