“Lawyering Across Public and Private Markets" with Matthew Bloom ’08 of Viking Global Investors LP

Oct. 21, 2026
12:10PM - 1:00PM
SLB Room 128
Open to the Yale Community

You are general counsel of a large investment firm.  Your firm is a “crossover manager,” meaning that it has funds that invest in public equities, funds that invest in private equity, and funds that invest in private credit.  This morning, you learn that the credit team is exploring lending to (i) an existing public equity portfolio company or (ii) an existing private equity portfolio company.  What do you do?  How might you identify and manage the potential conflicts of interest?

If you are intrigued by these questions but have no idea how to answer them, please join us for a Marvin A. Chirelstein Colloquium with Matthew Bloom ’08, General Counsel of Viking Global Investors, who addresses these questions, and many others, on a daily basis.  Matthew will also discuss his path to becoming General Counsel, and how he honed the professional judgment and institutional awareness required to effectively guide Viking Global Investors through multiple, complex legal landscapes while effectuating its business strategies.

Lunch will be available shortly after 12:00 p.m. and the Colloquium will start at 12:10 p.m. Please register by Thursday, October 15th. This event is off the record and not open to press.

Matthew Bloom ’08 is general counsel of Viking Global Investors LP, and is responsible for overseeing all legal, compliance, regulatory, and transactional matters. Matthew was previously deputy general counsel and chief compliance officer. Prior to joining Viking in 2013, Matthew was a Litigation Associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. He also served as a law clerk to the Hon. Joel M. Flaum of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Matthew received a J.D. from Yale Law School and a B.A. in history from Yale College.

Sarath Sanga '14, YLS professor of law and co-director, YLS Center for the Study of Corporate Law, will moderate the conversation.
