Description

The one-day virtual symposium will highlight the extraordinary life and work of Yale Law School Alumna (1974) and Harvard Law (Emerita) Professor Lani Guinier, her importance to the Yale Law School community, the special intersectional barriers she faced and shattered, and the paths of those shaped by the trail she blazed. The symposium will provide the Yale Law School community, former students, collaborators and colleagues of Professor Guinier, the opportunity to engage with her scholarly work and set a forward-looking agenda for scholarship, practice and pedagogy.

A goal of the symposium is to provide a dynamic platform and ongoing opportunities to build on and innovate Professor Guinier’s foundational ideas. In the course of her over 30-year career, Professor Guinier’s intellectual theories have influenced generations of law students, lawyers, activists and other scholars. Her pioneering scholarship on race, gender, class and the distribution of political power has redefined how we think about the law. Professor Guinier specializes in voting rights law, democratic theory and practice, educational access and pedagogy, and social justice with an emphasis on the relationship between issues of race, gender and class. Through her work, Professor Guinier has set the standard for excellence in scholarship and teaching, and has constantly challenged colleagues, collaborators, students and practitioners, alike, to think deeper and push the boundaries of what could be accomplished.

We are honored that the symposium will feature Sherrilyn Ifill, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) as the keynote speaker. Panelists will include scholars, practitioners, and activists, who will collaboratively consider and build off Professor Guinier’s contributions, in an effort to develop new and innovative tools in scholarship, practice and teaching.
