Over the last months, Latin America and the U.S. have experienced intense social protests in response to police and military officers' excessive use of force. Different sectors in American societies demand structural reforms that effectively eliminate police brutality against civilians.
Previous reform attempts have failed to reduce the illegal use of force by law enforcement agents, diminishing police and military institutions’ legitimacy in the continent.
This panel opens a discussion around the continent’s social unrest, challenges, and potential routes of action based on the panelists’ work in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Peru, and the United States, among other countries.
