Amid deteriorating US-China relations, the Taiwan Strait has become a dangerous flashpoint between the world’s two biggest powers. Please join us for a “deep dive” on the 1992 Consensus, which helped preserve the status quo across the Taiwan Strait from its inception until 2016, when it was rejected by the ruling DPP government in Taiwan. In part because the 1992 Consensus was an unwritten, informal agreement, many disagree about what it accomplished and why it has faded away. Yale Law School student Alyssa Resar will present her research on the topic, which examines the key documents leading up to and in the aftermath of the creation of the 1992 Consensus. Her research suggests that what the negotiators sought to formulate was a framework to manage the cross-strait relationship within what they recognized to be an “irresolvable conflict.” How does this translate to current day tensions and what can we learn from it?
