“Remaking China from the Outside” with Poynter Fellow Annie Jieping Zhang

Mar. 27, 2024
12:10PM - 1:00PM
SLB Room 129
Open to the Yale Community

What can Chinese journalists do in the face of political upheavals in their native land, and can the term “diaspora” signal not loss and departure but hope and renewal? Drawing on two-decades of reporting and firsthand experience, award-winning journalist and newsroom founder Annie Jieping Zhang will reflect on the changes in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese communities and explore potential paths of societal transformation.

Annie Jieping Zhang is the founder of Matters Lab — a decentralized social media platform, the 飛地 nowhere Bookstore — a bookstore designed for the Chinese diaspora, and the Frontline Fellowship — a non-fiction fellowship supporting Chinese independent journalism. She is also the co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Initium Media, an online Chinese-language publication established in Hong Kong in 2015. She is a 2023-2024 Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellow at Harvard.

This event will be moderated by Paul Tsai China Center Fellow Yangyang Cheng.
