In the first Trump administration, escalating economic competition, a trade war, and the COVID-19 pandemic placed great strains on the U.S.-China bilateral relationship. Though the Biden administration attempted some political reengagement, Washington maintained significant economic pressure on Beijing. After assuming office for a second time, President Trump has sought to further redefine U.S.-China ties through trade. Since January 2025, escalating tariffs, national security-framed trade measures, and fragile negotiations have dominated the bilateral relationship. PTCC Special Projects Chair Sam Kiernan ’26 will lead a student roundtable discussion on the state of U.S.-China relations and how President Trump’s trade, tariff, and negotiation strategies are affecting not just economic issues, but the entire bilateral relationship.
Open to YLS Students ONLY. Lunch will be served.
