For its session on Tuesday, 1 March 2022, the Seminar in Private Law is delighted to welcome Professor Rebecca J. Scott (University of Michigan, History & Law) and Professor Cynthia Estlund (NYU Law) for a conversation around the themes of "Labor, Slavery, and the Contemporary Workplace".

Professor Scott will discuss the idea of peremptory enslavement. Some background can be found in her article (co-authored with Carlos Venegas Fornias) "María Coleta and the Capuchin Friar: Slavery, Salvation, and the Adjudication of Status", 76:4 William and Mary Quarterly 727-762 (2019).

A growing portion of the American public—including policymakers, advocates, and institutional stakeholders—have accepted the fact that racism endemic to the United States infects every stage of the criminal legal system. Acceptance of this fact has resulted in efforts to address and remedy pervasive and readily observable systemic bias. Chief among those efforts is a turn toward technology—specifically algorithmic decision-making and actuarial tools.

All levels of experience are welcome, but for some classes you will need an item to lift with one hand (e.g., dumbbell, kettlebell or jug of milk). It would also be a good to have a yoga mat, bath towel or carpeted area for floor padding. This is open to all Yale University members.

He served as President of Mexico from 1994 to 2000. Before that he served as Secretary of Education, Secretary of Economic Programming and the Budget, Undersecretary of the Budget, and Deputy Director at the Central Bank of Mexico.

Human Rights Workshop: Bonyan Gamal and Miriam Puttick, "Seeking Reparations for Civilian Harm During Conflict in Yemen and Iraq"

Bonyan Gamal is a lawyer based in Sana'a Yemen, she is an Accountability and Redress officer at Mwatana for Human Rights, she has been working in Mwatana for 6 years, for two years she worked as a field researcher documenting human rights violations by all parties to the conflict, covering several governorates around Yemen. Then worked in the legal support unit providing legal support for the victims of detention related abuses in Yemen, focusing on Sana'a and supervising the team of lawyers in Aden and Al Houdaida governorates.
