About the Case
MFIA is working with a journalist in Alabama who has been frozen out from receiving information by multiple state agencies as a result of her critical reporting on the state’s prison system. The agencies refuse to return her messages, send her press releases, or reconsider their silent treatment. The clinic sent a demand letter to the state agencies, explaining that they were violating her First Amendment rights by giving her unequal access to information and impeding her newsgathering, and demanding that they restore her access. It also assisted in an open letter to the agencies, signed by journalists in Alabama and across the country, urging state officials to restore her equal access to information.
