Daniel Habib is a visiting clinical lecturer in law at Yale Law School. He is the attorney-in-charge for the Appeals Bureau at the Federal Defenders of New York. Before being appointed attorney-in-charge in 2025, Habib served as an assistant federal defender in that office from 2014–2025, representing indigent federal criminal defendants in trial, appellate, and postconviction matters. He practices primarily in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, where he has argued approximately 40 cases and won multiple reversals of convictions and sentences. Before joining the Federal Defenders, Habib was a managing associate at Orrick, Herrington, & Sutcliffe. He clerked for the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor of the Supreme Court of the United States and the Honorable William Fletcher of the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. Mr. Habib earned a B.A. from Harvard University and a J.D. from Yale Law School. Before attending law school, he was a staff writer at Sports Illustrated magazine, where he covered Major League Baseball.
