Gregory Curfman appointed as Senior Advisor, Physician-Scholar in Residence

The Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy announced the appointment of Gregory Curfman, M.D., a leading voice on health policy, as Senior Advisor and Physician-Scholar in Residence at the Center, beginning July 1, 2016. Dr. Curfman is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Health Publications, the publishing division of Harvard Medical School (HMS). Prior to joining Harvard, Dr. Curfman had a 28-year career as an editor of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), most recently as the Journal’s executive editor. He has written numerous editorials and Perspective articles for NEJM and has published widely in other health care journals.

Dr. Curfman’s expertise in scholarship has already proven to be instrumental to Yale Law students as his mentorship has helped them advance their research. Emma Roth ’16, one of the students currently working with Dr. Curfman, has an article that has been accepted for publication.

“Dr. Curfman is a brilliant scholar and a wonderful mentor," Roth said. "The Solomon Center student fellows are extraordinarily lucky to have the opportunity to work with him."

“It is truly an honor for the Solomon Center to have Greg join us," added Abbe Gluck '00, the Center’s Faculty Director. "He brings years of experience in medicine, research, and policy to the Center and, as a physician, brings the kind of interdisciplinary perspective that is at the heart of our mission.”

In addition to his work with Harvard Health Publications, Dr. Curfman is a member of the Faculty of Medicine at HMS, where he holds appointments in the Department of Medicine and Health Care Policy and teaches health care policy. He is also a member of the affiliated faculty of the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School. He is a member of the American Society of Law, Medicine, and Ethics, AcademyHealth, and serves on the Comparative Effectiveness Public Advisory Council of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review.  He has given testimony on health care issues to Senate and House committees, and has joined in amicus briefs for health-related Supreme Court cases. Dr. Curfman received his undergraduate education at Princeton University and medical education at Harvard Medical School. He is a board-certified cardiologist and internist.
