Professor Gewirtz Publishes Article in Global Order Journal

Professor Paul Gewirtz, Director of Yale Law School’s Paul Tsai China Center, recently published an article in the inaugural issue of the major new Chinese-language foreign affairs journal Global Order (全球秩序). The journal is founded and edited by Da Wei, Assistant President and Director of the Center for International Strategy and Security Studies at the University of International Relations in Beijing, and Chen Dingding, Professor of International Relations at Jinan University in Guangzhou. Global Order will publish articles from leading analysts from China and around the world focusing on global governance, international security, and Chinese foreign policy. It will be published biannually by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

In his new article, “China, the United States, and the Future of the Global Order,” Professor Gewirtz argues that although the international order is facing serious difficulties, it is nonetheless possible to renew the international system if stakeholders work to overcome these challenges, making appropriate adjustments both in the international system itself and in domestic policies that affect individual countries’ support for the international system. Professor Gewirtz also argues that recent tensions and increased competition between the United States and China can also threaten global order, but the U.S. and China are not "destined for war." The answer to the great geopolitical question of our age — whether the United States and China can co–exist peacefully as great powers, neither seeking to dominate the other — will depend on the tenacious will and sustained wisdom of human beings working to find a path forward from the present difficulties and create as much shared peace, prosperity and human flourishing as possible.
