Carmen Reinhart assumed the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at The World Bank Group in June 2020 and has provided thought leadership to the Bank throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Among her responsibilities at the Bank, she manages the Development Economics Department. In addition to her work at the Bank, she serves on the Advisory Panels of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the International Monetary Fund. Reinhart holds her position at the Bank on a public service leave from the Harvard Kennedy School, where she is the Minos A. Zombanakis Professor of the International Financial System.

Reinhart’s research on capital flows, exchange rate policy, banking and sovereign debt crises, and contagion has informed the contemporary understanding of financial crises in both advanced economies and emerging markets. In particular, her book (with Kenneth S. Rogoff), This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly, has been translated into more than 20 languages and won the Paul A. Samuelson Award. Ranked among the top economists worldwide based on publications and scholarly citations, Reinhart has been listed among Bloomberg Markets Most Influential 50 in Finance, Foreign Policy’s Top 100 Global Thinkers, and Thomson Reuters’ The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds. Among her many honors, she has been awarded the King Juan Carlos Prize in Economics and the Adam Smith Award from the National Association for Business Economics. She holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

A series of the Yale Law School Center for the Study of Corporate Law, the John R. Raben/Sullivan & Cromwell Fellowship Lecture honors the memory of John R. Raben ’39. A partner of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, Raben was counsel to investment banking and accounting firms and associations, including the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and counsel to the industry task force that helped draft the Securities Investor Protection Corporation legislation. The Fellowship Lecture was established by a gift from Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and augmented by friends of John R. Raben.
