Matt Ferchen is a Senior Research Scholar in Law and Senior Fellow at Yale Law School’s Paul Tsai China Center. He focuses on Chinese economic statecraft and economic influence as well as broader issues of economic security. His background is in both China's domestic and international political economy where he has long experience in academic and policy-focused research. He has published and spoken extensively about China's state-economy relations, China's relations with Latin America and Southeast Asia, and China's economic statecraft capacities. After completing his PhD in Government at Cornell University, he spent nearly a decade on the faculty of the International Relations Department at Tsinghua University and as a scholar at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy, both in Beijing. After moving from China to Europe, he was a lecturer in Chinese political economy at Leiden University, a Senior Fellow at the LeidenAsiaCentre and the Head of Global China Research at the Mercator Institute for China Studies.
