Alumni Weekend Oct. 19-21: Entertainment and the Law; Justice Ginsburg to Give Inaugural Gruber Lecture
“Entertainment and the Law” takes center stage this fall as the theme of Alumni Weekend 2012, being held Oct. 19-21 on the Yale Law School campus in New Haven. No auditions necessary; just sign up and you’re in for a fun and fascinating weekend, beginning with a very special guest on Friday afternoon – U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Justice Ginsburg is the inaugural speaker in the Gruber Program for Global Justice and Women's Rights’ Distinguished Lecture Series, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Friday with a panel of legal scholars (YLS faculty and alumni) exploring “Equality’s Frontiers.” Following the panel, at 4:00 p.m., Justice Ginsburg will engage in a conversation with Linda Greenhouse ’78 M.S.L., the Knight Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence and Joseph Goldstein Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School. Due to space limitations, reservations are required for each of these special events. To reserve a ticket for either or both, select them when you fill out your AW registration form, or if you won’t be attending any other Alumni Weekend events, please call the Office of Alumni Affairs at 203-432-1690. Registration deadline is Oct. 4.
On Saturday, an outstanding roster of alumni, faculty, and other experts will take part in panel discussions examining various aspects of entertainment and the law. Participants will include representatives from NBC Universal, Paramount Pictures, the Boston Red Sox, the LPGA, Nike, the Associated Press, and more. Among the panel topics are “Streaming and Beaming: Entertainment Where and When You Want It”; “Many Voices, Many Eyes: The Promises and Pitfalls of Social Networks”; “Yours, Mine and Ours: Ownership of Cultural Capital”; and “In the Legal Zone: Hot Topics in Sports Law.”
Other highlights of the weekend include Friday night’s All Alumni reception and dinner and the popular student-alumni breakfast connections Saturday morning. At lunch Saturday, alum David Boies ’66, chairman of Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, will be presented with the Yale Law School Association Award of Merit, and former Yale Law School Dean, The Honorable Guido Calabresi ’58, will be honored on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Saturday afternoon, J. Skelly Wright Professor of Law Heather Gerken will present “Countdown to Election 2012: A Last Minute Assessment,” a Class of 1952 event open to all Alumni Weekend attendees.
Detailed information about the weekend’s activities, including online registration and the complete schedule of events, is available on the Alumni Weekend website.
