Dean’s Office Renamed to Honor David Nierenberg ’78 and Patricia Nierenberg
In recognition of the extraordinary philanthropy made by David Nierenberg ’78 and Patricia Nierenberg to Yale Law School, the dean’s office will be renamed to the David ’75 YC, ’78 JD and Patricia Nierenberg Dean’s Suite.
David and Patricia have been faithful benefactors to Yale Law School for decades. In 2022, their generosity culminated when they — along with Soledad Hurst ’92 and Robert Hurst and Gene Ludwig ’73 and Carol Ludwig — became founding donors of the Hurst Horizon Scholarship Program, which provides free tuition for students with the most financial need.
“David never took [his] success for granted. Instead, he immediately set out to give away most of his wealth during his lifetime, helping those in the greatest need,” said Dean Heather K. Gerken at Alumni Weekend 2024 during an event to honor the Nierenbergs. “He has become one of the most active and generous philanthropists among our graduates, which is itself an astounding achievement given the generous spirit of our alums.”
Recently, the Nierenbergs magnified their donation with another historic gift to the Hurst Horizon program, allowing the Law School to expand its reach and help even more students in need.
“David and Patricia made more than just a financial contribution — they made it possible for all students here, regardless of their means, to pursue their legal education and career of choice without having to worry about crippling financial burdens,” Gerken continued.
During the 2024–2025 academic year, 88 students — including 15 percent of the 1L class — are receiving full-tuition scholarships through the Hurst Horizon Scholarship Program.
A ceremony was held during Alumni Weekend 2024 to honor the Nierenbergs and their history of giving, during which David encouraged fellow alumni to join in their example of generosity.
“This is a very special place, and we are all tremendously fortunate to be part of this family,” said David of Yale Law School. “Remember that this is family, and take the risk of making gifts while you are here and can enjoy the impact of what you’ve done.”
“The joy that one gets from seeing the impact of giving on others is for us … invaluable, and we would never, ever give it up,” said David.
