Patient-Assistance Programs, Kickbacks, and the Court

When patients cannot afford their drugs, patient assistance programs (PAPs) step up to help them pay. Private companies set up these PAPs to increase access to expensively developed drugs to low-income patients. But when government-sponsored insurance programs, like Medicaid, cover a portion of the drugs’ price, the private institutions profit directly from the PAPs they create. This event will offer different viewpoints to help attendees understand the important legal issues raised by patient assistance programs and consider how the private sector can best help patients. This issue has been moving through the courts and is expected to go up through the Supreme Court within the next few years.
