About the Prosecution Externship: In the Prosecution Externship, students work directly with criminal prosecutors in the United States Attorney’s Office in New Haven or Bridgeport, or in the Connecticut State’s Attorney’s Office in New Haven. Externs assigned to a U.S. Attorney’s Office assist in investigating and prosecuting matters including violent crimes, drug trafficking, and white-collar crime. Federal externs can also work on civil matters in either U.S. Attorney’s Office. Externs in the State’s Attorney’s Office often focus on homicides, but they can also participate in other matters if interested.

Externs assist attorneys with all aspects of cases, including legal research, drafting motions and briefs, and preparing for hearings and trials. Interested students may also handle appropriate matters in court under the supervision of attorneys. In the past, students have appeared in court, alongside attorneys, to handle initial appearances, detention hearings, guilty pleas, and sentencings.
