Ludwig Citizenship and Equality Speaker Series Presents: Steve Dettelbach, Former Director of the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives in conversation with Luke Bronin '06, Senior Distinguished Fellow in Residence, Tsai Leadership Program

What is driving violent crime in the United States and how do we deal with that problem? Can the federal government effectively implement Congress’s will in a post Chevron era? How do we both address gun violence and respect the Second Amendment? Join Steven Dettelbach, the nation’s recently departed Presidentially appointed and Senate confirmed ATF Director, the first in over seven years, for a discussion on leadership and how to address these and other pressing problems.

As of last month, Steven Dettelbach served as the ATF Director. In that role, he led the federal law enforcement agency that oversaw violent crime reduction and served as the chief regulator of the firearms and explosives industries. During his tenure, the United States saw major drops in violent crime after a historic spike during the pandemic.

Prior to leading ATF, Mr. Dettelbach spent over two decades as a civil rights lawyer, a federal prosecutor and a litigator at Baker Hostetler, where he is returning to lead the national litigation group. Mr. Dettelbach also served as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. During his tenure, he was also named to the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee, where he was Chair of the Civil Rights subcommittee.
