Health Affairs Piece on Government Negotiations and Prescription Drugs

Research at the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy has produced a publication in the Health Affairs Blog concerning the politics of government negotiations and prescription drugs provided through Medicare.

Student Fellow Ted Lee ’18, Solomon Center Faculty Director Professor Abbe R. Gluck '00 and Physician Scholar in Residence Dr. Greg Curfman conducted the research and wrote the piece. The group sought to understand the history and politics surrounding the statutory ban on government negotiations within Medicare Part D. Given the attention that the issue has received in the health policy literature and popular media during the 2016 Presidential Election, the group endeavored to summarize the issues and propose a way forward. Taking into account the Congressional gridlock on the issue and the lack of evidence to support complete repeal of the ban, the article offers a more incremental, evidence-based approach that involves the exercise of executive, rather than legislative power.
