John D. Morley ’06 to Join Yale Law School Faculty in July as Associate Professor of Law

Dean Robert Post ’77 has announced the appointment of John D. Morley ’06 to the Yale Law School faculty. He will join as an associate professor of law, effective July 1, 2013.

Morley, an expert in organizational law and investment management, is currently an associate professor of law at the University of Virginia School of Law. In 2012, he was named director of the school’s Law & Business Program, which integrates business and legal analysis in the law school classroom. Prior to his time at the University of Virginia, Morley served as an Associate Research Scholar and John R. Raben/Sullivan & Cromwell Executive Director of the Yale Law School Center for the Study of Corporate Law.

“We are delighted to welcome John back to the Yale Law School community,” said Dean Robert Post ’77. “John has significantly contributed to our understanding of the organization of mutual funds in ways that affect basic regulatory strategies. Mutual funds hold a very large percentage of public stock and bonds; they are the principal vehicle through which individuals participate in financial markets. It is of great importance to understand them, and John is already a leading scholar in theorizing their basic structure.”

Morley earned his B.S. degrees in economics and political science, graduating summa cum laude from the University of Utah in 2003 where he attended as a Presidential Scholar. He won the Philo S. Bennet Award for the best undergraduate thesis in political science. At Yale Law School, Morley served as essays editor of The Yale Law Journal and was a semifinalist and board member on the moot court. Following law school, Morley practiced law as an associate in the New York City office of Covington & Burling LLP in the Corporate and Securities Group.

Professor Morley has extensively researched the regulation of mutual funds, with four papers accepted for publication on the topic and further research soon to be published. His most recent works have been published in The Yale Law Journal, the Journal of Law, Economics and Organization, and the Yale Journal on Regulation.

In the spring of 2012, Morley served as a visiting scholar and fellow of the Center for Contract and Economic Organization at Columbia Law School. Morley will teach Business Organizations and Securities Regulation in the fall.
