Constitutional Attacks in India

Description

'Constitutional Attacks in India' will feature two constitutional law scholars, Professors Tarunabh Khaitan and Faizan Mustafa, and human rights lawyer Aman Wadud. The three will discuss recent developments in India that have caused massive protests and sparked a dialogue on discrimination, identity, and the Indian Constitution.

Specifically, the event will discuss the recent Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and proposed National Registry of Citizens (NRC) in India. The CAA created an expedited path to Indian citizenship for adherents to six religions who flee persecution in surrounding countries, but the Act notably excluded Muslim people from its list. The proposed NRC would require people in India to provide documents to prove their citizenship. These efforts together have raised legitimate concerns that the Indian Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is targeting India’s Muslim minority.
