Human Rights and the U.S.: A Community Conversation

Apr. 1, 2025

SLB Room 120
Open to the Yale Community

Join the Schell Center for an open community conversation on the state of human rights in the United States, led by Professor Claudia Flores, Co-Director of the Schell Center.

In recent months, the U.S. government has escalated its criticism and antagonism toward the international human rights system — questioning the legitimacy of international bodies, cutting USAID funding, and signaling hostility toward the use of terms like diversity, equality, racism, and gender in research and education. At the same time, the U.S. has expressed interest in "tak[ing] over" Gaza and continues to antagonize Ukraine, raising serious questions about its broader commitment to human rights and international cooperation.

With so much unfolding — both at home and abroad — it can feel overwhelming to keep track, much less figure out how to respond. This conversation offers a space to come together, share concerns, and think collectively about how we, as individuals and as a community, can engage with these challenges.

Whether you’re deeply engaged in human rights work or just beginning to explore these issues, all are welcome — bring your thoughts, questions, and ideas. We hope to see you there!
