Communication Workers of America Local 1298, a local union representing around 1,800 telecommunications workers across Connecticut, is challenging a series of decisions by Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA). These decisions force telecommunications companies to employ contractor labor for work that for decades was performed by union workers in Connecticut. On behalf of CWA Local 1298, WIRAC students filed a lawsuit in Connecticut Superior Court contending that PURA's contractor requirement exceeds PURA’s statutory authority as defined by General Statutes § 16-42 by interfering with contracts between public service companies and their employees. The lawsuit follows an April 2024 petition WIRAC filed on behalf of CWA Local 1298 to exhaust the union’s administrative remedies and open the door to state court litigation.
