Raaya Gomez

Raaya Gomez Headshot

Raaya is a Sri Lankan lawyer currently pursuing a J.S.D. at Yale Law School, where she also serves as Graduate Fellow-in-Law for the 2025-2026 academic year. She obtained her LL.M. from Yale Law School in 2022. During 2023-2024, Raaya received one of the Postgraduate Robina International Human Rights Fellowships from Yale to work at the European Court of Human Rights.

Raaya earned her LL.B. at the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo in 2018, graduating at the top of her class. She also earned an LL.B. from the University of London International Programmes in 2016. Prior to Yale, she worked in legal research and policy in Sri Lanka at several international human rights organizations including the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), Human Rights Watch and Equality Now. She also practiced law in Sri Lanka and has taught modules on international human rights for the Human and Fundamental Rights LL.M. at the University of Colombo.

Raaya’s academic interests lie in public law, international human rights law, women’s rights and access to justice. Her J.S.D dissertation focuses on feminist movements’ engagement with the law through public interest litigation in four countries in South Asia: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Her dissertation explores shared strategies feminist movements may utilize in advancing substantive equality through public interest litigation in South Asia.
